Pebbly Rocks give Clues to Streambed on Mars
Several slabs of pebble-containing rock were found on Mars recently, and, with the help of the Mars rovers, it was discovered that these were streambed pebbles that had been rounded through the flowing of water. These are the first such rocks to be found on Mars, and scientists were even able to calculate the depth and speed of the now-dry stream. It was about waist-deep and flowed at roughly 3 meters per second. The distribution of the pebbles closely resembles streambeds on Earth. Although Mars's atmosphere is now too thin for the planet to hold water, these pebbles offer insight into what Mars used to be like.

Interesting article Samantha! Its crazy to think that there may have been life on Mars at one point. These rocks encourage countless questions similar to when was there water on Mars, was Mars inhabitable some time ago and what sort of species lived there if Mars was able to sustain life.

This article is really interesting! I can't believe that water once existed on another planet such as Mars. I wonder if rocks like these have been found on multiple spots on Mars. Like Jack, I'm also starting to question if life may have actually existed before. Could there be a chance of these streams redeveloping, and if they redevelop does that mean that a form of life may begin to exist?

The evidence of running water helps out the argument that there could be life on mars. It is know that there was water on mars at one point, because of the ice on the planet, but running water is a sign of a more diverse environment which increase the chance for life. Relating life on mars or not, it is still an important discovery and an interesting article.
ReplyDeleteWow thats really interesting, I remember watching a documentary on the colonizing of mars by humans. Many scientists say that if we were to create a greenhouse effet on mars it could in time create a suitable atmosphere to sustain life. Who knows their could be life still alive on the planet. We have discovered bacteria that live on extremely harsh conditions on earth.
ReplyDeleteThat's a really interesting topic, and since I'm planning on being an astronaut one day, the title really caught my attention. I only hope that people view this discovery as scientific, and not as evidence of advanced extraterrestrial life. There is not sufficient evidence to support any such claims. I have a link to a debate on whether they exist or not.
